 Circo: Documenting the Real

Aaron Schock's "Circo" is among the Indie movies which made its way to the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival. Rising above the typical trait of indy films, its hyper-realistic drama with all its conflicts that are ugly and predictable renders the film the ability to survive. The plot of this independent film centres on the hardscrabble Ponce family circus in Mexico who is struggling to preserve their art and way of life against a collapsing rural economy. The documentary very well exhibits the inner conflict through the character of Tino who is indubitably been outright exploited by his parents as they collect all the money from the circus while Tino is wallow in debt; he nonetheless laments at the possibility of leaving his family (exploiting parents) and the circus which makes us question the very idea of an ideal family. This independent documentary not only provides us with an understanding of the harsh reality of the emotional tragedy to which human beings are often subject to but at the same time it can serve as a tool to break down barriers and create a greater understanding of other people and cultures.
